Committees of Council

The Town has formed multiple Committees of Council to assist in shaping our community's future. The purpose of the Committees is to provide advice and recommendations to Council on a variety of issues.

Each Committee will consist of at least one representative of Town Council, Town staff as required, and volunteer citizens from Trenton. Some committees may also include members from local groups/organizations, the Trenton business community or subject matter experts. Some Committees have additional requirements and qualification criteria such as skills and experience which is established in the Terms of Reference (table below).

Request for Tax Certificate

A tax certificate is a statement of property taxes levied and outstanding, which is usually requested by a lawyer in relation to the closing of a real estate transaction.

The current fee for a tax certificate is $20.00. Cheques should be made payable to the Town of Trenton.

Request a Tax Certificate

Tax certificate requests must be made in writing and can be sent along with payment to:

Town of Trenton
P.O. Box 328
Trenton, NS
B0K 1X0

Requests can also be submitted via fax: 902-752-0090 or email:

To avoid delay, a minimum of five (5) business days are required when requesting tax certificates from the Town of Trenton.

Property Taxes

The Town of Trenton invoices property tax bills to all property owners twice each year. The tax year covers the fiscal period of April 1st to March 31st.

Interim Tax Bill

The interim (or first) tax bill is sent out by mail in early April annually, due May 31. The interim tax bill is based on 50 per cent of the current year’s estimated taxes, using the current year’s assessment of your property value (as sent out by PVSC each January) and calculated using the previous fiscal year's tax rates (as set by Council each spring).

Final Tax Bill

The second and final bill is sent out by mail in early September annually, due October 31. The final tax bill is calculated using the current assessment with the current year’s rates, less the amount you already paid from the interim bill.

Current Tax Rates (2024/25) & Property Assessments

Tax calculations are based on the taxable assessed value of the property multiplied by the applicable tax rate.

Residential - $2.04*
Commercial - $4.10*
Fire Protection Rate - $0.145*
*for every $100 of assessed value

Solid Waste User Fee - Annual flat rate $146.00 per dwelling unit (Waste Management)

The taxable assessed value is determined by the Property Valuation Services Corporation. Property owners can obtain detailed information on their property by accessing their "My Property Report" at www.pvsc.ca. You will need to enter your Assessment Account Number (AAN) and PIN access number found on the upper right-hand corner of your assessment notice. For more information, you can contact PVSC at 1-800-380-7775.

Payment Options

There are several options for owners to pay their Property Taxes in Trenton:

  • In-person at Town Hall (120 Main Street, Trenton) Town Hall public office hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 4:00pm
  • Online Banking - Use your Municipal Account Number found on your tax bill for online banking. The 8 digit account number needed will be numbers only (12345678) unlike your customer code which has letters & numbers (ABCDE001) - do not use this code for online banking.
  • Mailed Cheques - Cheques can be made out to "Town of Trenton" and mailed to: Town of Trenton, P.O. Box 328, Trenton, NS B0K 1X0
  • At your local bank branch - Bring your tax bill to your local bank branch for payment.
  • Direct Payment Plan - To set up a direct payment plan, please complete the pdf Pre-Authorized Payment Plan – Acknowledgement Form (945 KB) and submit to Town Hall with a void cheque or automatic withrawal form from your banking institution. For more information, please contact Town Hall at 902-752-5311.

Late Payments

The total amounts billed must be paid by the due date to avoid interest charges. Interest will accumulate at 1.25% per month to all outstanding taxes following the due date.

Online payments may take 2-3 business days (Monday to Friday) to be processed by your bank. For this reason, payments do not reach the Town on the same day the payment is made. For example, payments made late Saturday or on Sunday are not likely to be received by the Town until at least Tuesday. Banking institutions are closed on many holidays which will also affect their processing time. Please take this into consideration as interest may be charged if the payment has not reached the Town by the billing due date.

Cheques mailed to the Town are processed when they are received. This means the cheque date is not considered the actual payment date. Please take this into consideration when mailing payments by cheque. To ensure payments are received in a timely manner, consider post-dating your cheque and mailing it early enough to be received and processed by the Town prior to/on the billing due date.

Property Tax Sales

Tax Accounts that are two (2) years in arrears are subject to Tax Sale Proceedings and may be sold at a Public Auction in accordance with the Municipal Government Act. The Town conducts a tax sale annually in June. Leading up to the Tax Sale, notifications will be published twice in a local newspaper and on the Town's website.
