Beyond the bookshelves, from our hearts to yours/stay in touch

While the doors and book drops are closed at your local library, reading is still available online for all ages and interests.

Following NS Public Health directives, the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library (PARL) Board made the difficult decision to close its physical doors to the public until further notice, beginning on March 16, 2020. “We regret this decision but it is obviously the right one. We know many people depend upon our services for literacy, learning, internet access, and much more, but extraordinary times require extraordinary measures”, says John Blackwell, Board Chair.

In the meantime, library staff have been busy shifting attention to our free online library services. The Regional Library has allocated over 50 percent in extra funding to our Overdrive collection of e-books and downloadable audiobooks. For magazine readers we have a free collection of popular magazines through RB Digital. You can also brush up on your language skills through Rocket Languages. And don’t forget to look at NovaStory.ca, our online collection of local history books, maps, photos, and more. For children and teen readers, we have Tumblebooks for interactive learning and enjoyment.

PARL has also introduced a new free online service, PressReader, that has access to thousands of newspapers and magazines, from all over the world - and in a variety of languages. Think of a special interest, and PressReader will have it.

All these online services are free – and available with a free library card.

Have a question, or need a library card? The regional library has several ways for you to contact us. We will be answering the phone, and email - Monday through Friday, from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Please call or text 1(902) 759-2310, email (anytime), or complete the online “Get a Library Card” form on our website, www.parl.ns.ca

We have also created a special information section on our website, www.parl.ns.ca, for information about the Corona virus, Covid-19, and how to find all of our online services.

“Your public library is here for you during this time of uncertainty.” says Chief Librarian Eric Stackhouse, “We know online services are not for everyone, nor possible for everyone. We look forward to opening our doors again, but in the meantime our staff members will continue to be innovative in how we can continue to serve you.”.
